Activity Description

Fungal infections are commonly encountered in the oral and maxillofacial regions. They may present clinically in the oral cavity as a primary infection or as a manifestation of dissemination. Most oral fungal infections are opportunistic. Physical examination is vital for diagnosis, especially in immunocompromised patients. Fungal infections of the oral mucosa are primarily diagnosed clinically. Characteristic features include a burning sensation and an unpleasant taste in the mouth, white plaques, ulcerations, erythema, and pain. Histopathologic evaluation may also be performed for diagnostic confirmation. Management involves maintaining proper oral and denture hygiene, evaluating and correcting predisposing factors, and selecting an appropriate antifungal agent. For some types of fungal infections, surgical debridement is indicated. Clinical assessment of oral lesions, recognizing and correcting the underlying predisposing factors, and administering appropriate antifungal agents are the cornerstones for managing oral mycoses.

This activity for healthcare professionals aims to enhance learners' competence in appropriately evaluating oral fungal infections, managing underlying etiologies, and fostering effective interprofessional teamwork to improve outcomes.
