Activity Description

Root canal therapy is performed to remove affected dental pulp tissue, clean and disinfect the root canal system, and ultimately seal the canal system using a variety of available materials. The filling of root canals, referred to as obturation, utilizes a variety of materials to ensure that any residual microorganisms are completely entombed, thus preventing future proliferation. Operators commonly use a combination of a root canal sealer and core filling material to accomplish this goal. Both root canal sealers and core materials are available in various compositions and therefore differ in their indications and uses. This activity reviews the materials used to fill root canals and highlights the key differences between materials as well as indications and contraindications to improve treatment outcomes for patients who undergo root canal therapy.
