Activity Description

Chronic pain affects over one-quarter of the United States population and is a prevalent complaint seen in outpatient medical clinics. The condition encompasses a wide range of persistent discomfort lasting beyond 3 to 6 months and often originates from various sources, including injury, disease, or unknown causes. Chronic pain can significantly impair an individual's quality of life, leading to physical limitations, emotional distress, and social isolation. Moreover, the failure to diagnose and effectively manage chronic pain can contribute to opioid use disorders and increase morbidity and mortality rates among affected individuals. Therefore, healthcare professionals must understand chronic pain and implement appropriate treatment strategies.

This activity provides healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of chronic pain, including its evaluation and treatment modalities. Participants explore the multifaceted nature of chronic pain, including the underlying mechanisms, assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions. The course also emphasizes the importance of an integrated approach to chronic pain management, highlighting the role of the healthcare team in providing holistic care to patients. By enhancing knowledge and skills in chronic pain management, participants are better equipped to address the complex needs of patients in pain and improve outcomes in clinical practice.


Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, dentists, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Differentiate between acute and chronic pain and nociceptive and neuropathic pain mechanisms.

  • Select the appropriate methodology to identify chronic pain, characterize chronic pain, and differentiate the types of chronic pain. 

  • Apply pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions appropriately in the management of chronic pain.

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including pain specialists, psychologists, and physical therapists, to optimize patient care.
