Activity Description

Colorectal cancer is an increasingly important public health problem in the United States and worldwide. Colorectal cancers have the highest incidence among malignancies after lung cancer, breast cancer in women, and prostate cancer in men. This condition is the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Despite sharing similar disease biology, colon and rectal cancers are considered separately, given the diagnostic technique and treatment differences. Colon cancer is often sporadic and related to risk factors such as age, race, diet, and the presence of inflammatory bowel disease. Hereditary colon malignancies are most commonly associated with Lynch syndrome and genetic polyposis syndromes. Screening colonoscopy is critical in identifying premalignant and early-stage lesions. Surgery is the mainstay of curative treatment, with chemotherapy being a necessary adjunct. Radiation plays an integral role in rectal cancer but is less commonly used to treat colon cancer.

This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners' competence in evaluating and managing colorectal cancer. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the condition's epidemiology, risk factors, presentation, screening methods, diagnosis, staging, and evidence-based treatment options. Learners are empowered with the necessary tools to collaborate effectively within an interprofessional team caring for patients with colorectal cancer.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Screen individuals at risk of colon cancer.

  • Create a clinically appropriate diagnostic plan for people with possible colorectal cancer.

  • Develop a personalized management strategy for an individual diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

  • Collaborate with all interprofessional team members, including clinicians, nutritionists, dieticians, palliative service, social workers, and case managers, to provide efficient, comprehensive, and coordinated care for patients with colon cancer.
