Activity Description

Acute pancreatitis is the leading cause of gastrointestinal-related hospitalization in the United States, and its frequency continues to rise in the United States and worldwide. The severity of the disease varies widely, from mild disease needing conservative treatment to severe and complicated disease with high morbidity and mortality. The most common causes of acute pancreatitis include gallstones, alcohol use, and hypertriglyceridemia. The rate of occurrence of each etiology of acute pancreatitis varies across geographic regions and socioeconomic strata. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of acute pancreatitis and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in managing this condition.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe a patient presentation consistent with acute pancreatitis.
  • Summarize how to use the Revised Atlanta Classification to diagnose pancreatitis.
  • Outline the treatment strategy for acute pancreatitis.
  • Review the roles of interprofessional team members in both prevention of and management of patients with acute pancreatitis.

Not appropriate for RN CE. Topics such as diagnostic criteria, scan interpretation, and prognostic scales are not appropriate materials for the scope of practice of a RN.
