Activity Description

Serotonin syndrome, also known as serotonin toxicity, poses a significant clinical challenge due to its potentially life-threatening nature and diverse etiology. Resulting of excessive serotonergic activity in the central nervous system, this condition arises from various sources, including therapeutic medication use, drug interactions, and intentional overdoses. Despite its severity, serotonin syndrome's clinical spectrum ranges from mild to fatal, manifesting with symptoms such as altered mental status, autonomic dysfunction, and neuromuscular excitation.

This course highlights clinicians' challenges in distinguishing serotonin syndrome from other toxicities, underscoring the critical role of interdisciplinary collaboration in prompt recognition and management. Furthermore, the course emphasizes the indispensable role of interprofessional teamwork in optimizing patient outcomes. By fostering collaboration and communication among team members, participants will learn how to leverage expertise and resources to ensure timely intervention and enhance patient care.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and dentists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify the signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome in patients presenting with altered mental status, neuromuscular hyperactivity, and autonomic instability.

  • Apply the Hunter Toxicity Criteria Decision Rules and determine how they assist in diagnosing serotonin syndrome.

  • Differentiate serotonin syndrome from other toxicities with similar presentations, such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, through comprehensive clinical assessment and history-taking.

  • Collaborate with pharmacists, toxicologists, and other specialists to optimize medication management and supportive care for patients with serotonin syndrome.
