Activity Description

Thrombosis is a blood clot within blood vessels that limits the flow of blood. Acute venous and arterial thromboses are the most common cause of death in developed countries. The mortality rate varies with the location and acuity of thrombosis. Myocardial infarctions and cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) account for the highest proportion of thrombosis-associated deaths in the United States. This activity reviews the basic pathophysiology, provoking risk factors, and evaluation of venous and arterial thromboses and highlights the role of interprofessional team members in collaborating to provide well-coordinated care and enhance outcomes for affected patients.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Identify patients at elevated risk of thrombosis by recognizing key clinical factors, including family history, smoking history, and medical comorbidities.

  • Implement evidence-based guidelines for anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy, tailoring treatment duration and regimens to individual patient profiles.

  • Select appropriate diagnostic tools and interpret results accurately to aid in the diagnosis and management of thrombotic events.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, ensuring they understand the risks, benefits, and potential complications of thrombosis therapies.
