Activity Description

Opioid use disorder and opioid addiction remain at epidemic levels in the U.S. and worldwide. Three million US citizens and 16 million individuals worldwide have had or currently suffer from opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 500,000 in the United States are dependent on heroin. The diagnosis of OUD is made by meeting two or more of the eleven criteria in a year time period. This activity reviews the epidemiology of opioid addiction and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in its management.

Target Audience

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, physician associates, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and social workers.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology of opioid addiction.

  • Recall the mode of action of opioids.

  • Summarize the treatment for opioid addiction.

  • Review the importance of improving care coordination among interprofessional team members to improve outcomes for patients affected by opioid addiction.

This particular monograph was a joke. It mentions a medication, nalbumetone, that it says is useful in treatment of OUD, then gives no further info. The only medication close to this to be found on the internet is nabumetone, an NSAID that in no way treats opioid use disorder or opioid withdrawal. There was really no teaching until you took the test. Very disappointed, since I’ve generally been very impressed with StatPearls content and monographs.
